CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT

Smith needed a drink. He’d left the large conference room as soon as possible and headed outside for a smoke. He finished his first cigarette and lit the end of another one with it. The press conference had really taken it out of him. It had started well but Matt McLean’s appearance had really unnerved him.

What was he doing there?

As far as Smith was aware, Matt had nothing to do with the press. He smoked the last drag of his cigarette, kept it in his lungs for as long as he could manage and exhaled a cloud of smoke.

He went back inside the station to look for Chalmers. He was going to suggest a drink at the Hog’s Head to thank the DCI for sticking his neck out for him. Brownhill was talking to PC Baldwin by the front desk when he walked past. Smith was halfway down the corridor that led to the offices when he heard Brownhill call his name. He turned around and walked back to the front desk.

“What’s up, boss?”

“A young woman has been found dead at home on Grey Street. Her boyfriend found her slumped on a chair in the kitchen and called it in. Uniform was dispatched and it’s confirmed that she is dead. Bridge and Yang Chu are there now. I want you to get down there too.”

“Can’t someone else deal with it?” Smith said. “I’m knackered after the press conference and this shitty day.”

“I appreciate that, but I think you’ll want to go. It looks like we’ve got another one.”

“Another one?”

“Bridge called a short while ago. They found another envelope with the name handwritten on the front. And there was another note with your number on it.”

“Shit,” Smith said and closed his eyes. “I don’t know how much more of this I can take. What’s the address again?”

Smith drove far too quickly to the address he’d been given for the woman who’d been found dead in the kitchen. He felt quite sick – if what Brownhill had told him was correct three people had died from snake venom in the space of a few days. All three of them were told to contact him on his mobile number and say the words, ‘I want to live.’ He still didn’t have the faintest idea what it all meant. The press conference had left his head spinning and seeing Matt McLean there had made it worse.

What was Lucy McLean’s brother doing at a press conference? Smith thought, and why the sudden disappearing act?

Those thoughts were pushed aside when Smith parked outside the address Brownhill had given him. Yang Chu’s Ford Focus was there as was Grant Webber’s car. An ambulance was parked directly outside the house. Smith experienced a flashing sensation of déjà vu. How many times had he arrived at this exact crime scene? Even the crowd of people gathered seemed the same – like extras in a movie he had been forced to watch over and over again.

Smith walked past a middle-aged PC, nodded and went inside the house.
